Things to keep in mind when buying a snow blower

Tired of shoveling snow? If you’re looking for a new snow blower (snow thrower), here are a few things to think about before your purchase.

Single-stage Snow Blowers

Single-stage snow blowers use a corkscrew style auger to pick up the snow from the ground. This same auger is the part of the snow blower that throws the snow through the chute. Single-stage snow blowers are best for smaller driveways, sidewalks and decks with smaller amounts of snow, usually less than 6 inches. 

Single-stage snow blowers are also lighter in weight and easier to maneuver. Certain models come with LED lights to help you work in dark. There are also some models that have electric start.

Two-stage Snow Blowers

Two-stage snow blowers are most effective for clearing heavy and packed snow. Two-stage means that the snow moves through the machine in two steps; first through the auger screw before being discharged through the chute by an impeller fan. Two-stage snow throwers can move more amounts of snow at a time and can throw the snow further than single-stage blowers. Two-stage models also come with powered wheels.

Because of the way the augers work on two-stage models they can be used on gravel or dirt driveways. (Some adjustments necessary before this type of use.)

A few other things to consider when you buy a snow blower:

 - Power Steering

A snow blower with power steering is easier to maneuver. Select snow blowers feature convenient trigger control power steering that allows you to operate each wheel/track separately, providing superior maneuverability and room for tight turning.

 - Electric Start

For trouble-free cold starting you might consider a model with electric start. Simply connect the machine to a power outlet and press a button to start the engine. This is a great help, especially on those really cold days and there is no need to worry about a battery.

 - Heated handle-grips

For more comfortable operation when the temperatures are really low, choose a snow blower with heated handles.
